County. Founded just one day before Alabama became a state, Wilcox County has more historical buildings than any county in the state except
Mobile County.
      
Nestled in the famed Black Belt, a region named
for the dark rich soil that runs across the state, the county was named for Lieutenant Joseph M. Wilcox,
a young West Point graduate, who died fighting Indians here in 1814.
   
Regional historic sites include the Confederate Memorial Statue, the Dale Masonic Lodge, the Wilcox Female Institute and the Camden Associate
Reformed Presbyterian Church.
